VERTICAL TAKES U.S. RIGHTS TO HORROR FLICK “TORMENT”

VERTICAL ENTERTAINMENT has taken the U.S. rights to FILMAX INTERNATIONAL´s latest horror pic, TORMENT.

The film, which comes from producers Borga Dorter and Jordan Barker of Canadian outfit Gearshift and also has Barker taking up the director´s reins, stars Robin Dunne (Sanctuary), Katie Isabelle (American Mary, Ginger Snaps) and  Peter DaCunha as the ill-fated family who fall prey to a group of psychotic madmen at their isolated country house.

TORMENT, which had its world premiere at the last edition of Screamfest in LA, will have its theatrical release in early summer 2014 in the U.S.

Rich Goldberg of Vertical Entertainment said of TORMENT “it’s the type of horror film that is so unique and iconic in its look and feel, that we felt acquiring the film would give us something extremely special in a genre market that has been growing exponentially in the past few years. A title like this stands out above the rest, and we are very pleased to bring it to U.S. Audiences this summer.”

Iván Díaz, head of Filmax´s International Sales department, speaks excitedly about Vertical´s acquisition: “We are really thrilled that Vertical has taken the rights to TORMENT in the U.S. They are a highly respected company whose main concern is always the quality of the films they distribute. It has been a real pleasure negotiating this deal with them and we have no doubt that they will do a great job with it in the U.S. This deal gives the film an added value for sales in other territories.”  The film will also be shown at market screenings in Berlin at the EFM starting this week.

FILMAX INTERNATIONAL have already sold the rights to the “Home Invasion” pic in Mexico to Star Castle, in Brazil to Santos Films, in Peru to Star Films and in Hong Kong to Sundream.

Synopsis

Newlyweds Sarah and Cory Morgan have decided to take a relaxing holiday with Cory’s 7 year old son Liam to try and smooth over some of the teething problems Liam is having with his new Mom.

Despite the idyllic location of Cory’s isolated and luxurious country house, the family soon realize they have made a mistake in going there. The house brings back too many painful memories of Liam’s deceased Mom and the boy reacts angrily, punishing Sarah for trying to take his Mom’s place.

However, the boy’s discomfort is soon put to one side when they realize that someone has been using the house in their absence. After having a police officer inspect the house and reassure them that there’s nothing to worry about, the couple decides that they will stay, at least for one night. Another big mistake.

Their unwanted house guests will soon reveal themselves and the family will find itself caught up in a fight for their lives. What was planned as a relaxing getaway quickly turns into their worst nightmare as the family find themselves on a holiday from hell.
