Alex de la Iglesia’s ‘Four’s a Crowd’ Pounced On by Filmax (EXCLUSIVE)

Alex de la Iglesia’s latest production, feature “Four’s a Crowd,” is being brought onto the Cannes Film Market by Filmax, which has acquired international sales rights.

Described by Filmax as a “wild romantic comedy,” “Four’s a Crowd” turns on Julian, a 50-year-old divorced man who starts to use an app to share his car with strangers and most especially Lorena, a young woman with whom Julian would like to share much more.

He’s about to open up to Lorena when he’s lumbered unexpectedly with a fourth passenger, possibly the most annoying person on the planet, who sparks a radical change in the course of events.

“Four’s a Crowd” is “a very personal reflection on human joy and misery, where nothing is as it seems,” Filmax said in a statement.

Written with De La Iglesia’s career-long co-scribe Jorge Guerricaechevarría, “Four’s a Crowd” is produced by Pokeepsie Films, Alex De la Iglesia’s own label, and Spanish production powerhouse Telecinco Cinema (“Pan’s Labyrinth,” “The Impossible”), the production arm of broadcast network Mediaset España. It will be released at the end of 2022. Filmax will screen a promo at Cannes.

“We’re looking for the Holy Trinity: a good story, a touch of risk and a whole lot of fun,” said De la Iglesia and Pokeepsie Films co-founder Carolina Bang.

They went on to call “Four’s A Crowd” a mix of “characters who have set out on a journey through life as if it were a race to the finish, some classic comedy and, above all, a cast that has given its all so that the audience enjoys traveling along with them.”

“We are so excited to be working with Álex, who’s such a well-respected and well-known director, both here in Spain and all over the world,” said Filmax Head of International Iván Díaz.

He added: “We are also delighted to be continuing our wonderful relationship with Telecinco, with whom we worked on some of their latest box-office hits, such as ‘Undercover Wedding Crashers,’ ‘If I Were a Rich Man’ and ‘I Can Quit Whenever I Want.’”

Breaking out with 1995’s seminal “The Day of the Beast,” De la Iglesia’s “The Last Circus” (2010) won Venice Festival best director and screenplay awards from a jury headed by Quentin Tarantino. 

More recent movies such as “Witching & Bitching” (2013, €15 million ($15.75 million) at the Spanish box office), “My Big Night” (2015, €12 million- – $12.6 million) and the remake of the Italian movie “Perfect Strangers” (2017, €20 million – $21 million ) have consolidated De la Iglesia’s status as frequently one of Spain’s biggest audience directors.
